Te Deum Laudamus.

WE praise thee, O God : we acknowledge thee to be the Lord.

All the earth doth worship thee : the Father everlasting.

To thee all Angels cry aloud : the Heavens, and all the Powers therein.

To thee Cherubim and Seraphim : continually do cry,

Holy, Holy, Holy : Lord God of Sabaoth;

Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty : of thy glory.

The glorious company of the Apostles : praise thee.

The goodly fellowship of the Prophets : praise thee.

When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man : thou didst not abhor the Virgin’s womb.

When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death : thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers.

Thou sittest at the right hand of God : in the glory of the Father.

We believe that thou shalt come : to be our Judge.

We therefore pray thee, help thy servants : whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood.

Make them to be numbered with thy Saints : in glory everlasting.

O Lord, save thy people : and bless thine heritage.

Govern them : and lift them up for ever.

Day by day : we magnify thee;

And we worship thy Name : ever world without end.

Vouchsafe, O Lord : to keep us this day without sin.

O Lord, have mercy upon us : have mercy upon us.

O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us : as our trust is in thee.

O Lord, in thee have I trusted : let me never be confounded.

ALMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

O COME, let us sing unto the Lord : let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving : and show ourselves glad in him with Psalms.

For the Lord is a great God : and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are all the corners of the earth : and the strength of the hills is his also.

The sea is his, and he made it : and his hands prepared the dry land.

O come, let us worship and fall down : and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

For he is the Lord our God : and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.

To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts : as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness;

When your fathers tempted me : proved me, and saw my works.

Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said : It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways.

For 2018 my plan is to modify our weekly email in two ways: (1) Instead of using a portion from the Psalter at the beginning, I will use a canticle. I will work through the canticles in Morning Prayer and then Evening Prayer in the 1662 BCP. I will supplement them with other canticles as the year progresses. (2) I will be adding a second Collect taken from The Brotherhood Prayer Book, 2^nd ed. Though this is a Lutheran prayer book, it takes Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, Psalms (from the KJV), and other pieces, and sets them to Gregorian Chant. I have used this prayer book for nearly a decade. For future years if you have other suggestions for Collects, etc. please let me know.

1. IF THE Lord himself had not been on our side, now may Israel say : if the Lord himself had not been on our side, when men rose up against us;

2. They had swallowed us up quick : when thy were so wrathfully displeased at us.

Personal: As we employ this Collect, several thoughts come to mind. First, recognize that we’re praying for the church world over; the church in hot and hostile places, as well as at home. Second, for the church in our own country with all of its internal turmoil and tensions. Third, our own denomination, however large or small. Fourth, the churches in our own community or the churches represented by those who live in our neighborhood. Lastly, your own congregation.

Then supplement the “in continual godliness,” “free from all adversities” and “to serve thee in good works” with Paul’s prayer in Philippians 1.9-11. What a prayer that will be!!!

Personal: Since that great cloud of witnesses includes many who are not remembered by feast days – such as faithful mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, mentors, grandparents, etc. I would like to recommend adding – as you see fit – this adaptation of a collect for a saint’s day and maybe include the memory of other Christians who have since gone, but who had an impact on your faith and life:

O ALMIGHTY God, who hast called us to faith in thee, and hast compassed us about with so great a cloud of witnesses; Grant that we, encouraged by the good examples of thy Saints, and especially of thy servant [——], may persevere in running the race that is set before us, until at length, through thy mercy, we, with them, attain to thine eternal joy; through him who is the author and finisher of our faith, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. 132. O look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me : as thou usest to do unto those that love thy Name.

133. Order my steps in thy word : and so shall no wickedness have dominion over me.

134. O deliver me from the wrongful dealings of men : and so shall I keep thy commandments.

135. Shew the light of thy countenance upon thy servant : and teach me thy statutes.

136. Mine eyes gush out with water : because men keep not thy law.

LORD, we pray thee that thy grace may always *prevent and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
