The Twelfth
Sunday after Trinity.
Te Deum Laudamus.
We praise thee, O God : we acknowledge thee to be the Lord.
All the earth doth worship thee : the Father everlasting.
To thee all Angels cry aloud : the Heavens, and all the Powers therein.
To thee Cherubim and Seraphim : continually do cry,
Holy, Holy, Holy : Lord God of Sabaoth;
Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty : of thy glory.
The glorious company of the Apostles : praise thee.
The goodly fellowship of the Prophets : praise thee.
The noble army of Martyrs : praise thee.
The holy Church throughout all the world : doth acknowledge thee;
The Father : of an infinite Majesty;
Thine honourable, true : and only Son;
Also the Holy Ghost : the Comforter.
Thou art the King of Glory : O Christ.
Thou art the everlasting Son : of the Father.
When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man : thou didst not abhor the
Virgin’s womb.
When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death : thou didst open the
Kingdom of Heaven to all believers.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God : in the glory of the Father.
We believe that thou shalt come : to be our Judge.
We therefore pray thee, help thy servants : whom thou hast redeemed
with thy precious blood.
Make them to be numbered with thy Saints : in glory everlasting.
O Lord, save thy people : and bless thine heritage.
Govern them : and lift them up for ever.
Day by day : we magnify thee;
And we worship thy Name : ever world without end.
Vouchsafe, O Lord : to keep us this day without sin.
O Lord, have mercy upon us : have mercy upon us.
O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us : as our trust is in thee.
O Lord, in thee have I trusted : let me never be confounded.

ALMIGHTY
and everlasting God, who art always more ready
to hear than we are to pray, and art wont to give more than either we desire,
or deserve; Pour down upon us the abundance of thy mercy; forgiving us those
things whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things which
we are not worthy to ask, but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ,
thy Son, our Lord. Amen.

This was my letter to my congregation this past week:
Yesterday I went to visit someone in the hospital. While I was there, I read Scripture, sang a hymn (as I am known to do), and prayed. The hymn I sang was How Firm a Foundation. The reason I like singing that hymn is because each verse is from Scripture, many of which are out of Isaiah, and made rhythmic so it can be sung. Here’s how it goes:
1. “How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in his excellent Word! What more can he say than to you he has said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?” - “…therefore thus says the Lord GOD, “Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste’” (Isaiah 28:16) which makes one think of how this verse is quoted in 1 Peter 2:6, “For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.””
2. “Fear not, I am with you, O be not dismayed; for I am your God, and will still give you aid; I'll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand, upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.” - “fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).
3. “When through the deep waters I call you to go, the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow; for I will be with you, your troubles to bless, and sanctify to you your deepest distress.” - “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;…” (Isaiah 43:2a).
4. “When through fiery trials your pathway shall lie, my grace, all-sufficient, shall be your supply; the flame shall not hurt you; I only design your dross to consume and your gold to refine.” - “…when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you” and “I will turn my hand against you and will smelt away your dross as with lye and remove all your alloy” (Isaiah 43:2b and 1:25).
5. “E'en down to old age all my people shall prove my sovereign, eternal, unchangeable love; and when hoary hairs shall their temples adorn, like lambs they shall still in my bosom be borne.” - “Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne by me from before your birth, carried from the womb; even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save” (Isaiah 46:3-4). By the way, “hoary hairs” is older english for white or gray hairs.
6. “The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose, I will not, I will not desert to his foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I'll never, no never, no never forsake.” - “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident” and “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God” (Psalm 27:1-3 and 1 Peter 3:18).
Putting that together was edifying and enjoyable!
